Eau de Toilette Perfume Frequently Asked Questions

Eau de Toilette (EDT) contains a lower concentration of fragrance oil- typically 5–15%- compared to Eau de Parfum (EDP) at 15–20%, resulting in a lighter, more transparent scent with less longevity. EDTs tend to project more freely and brightly in the first few hours before fading, while EDPs create a denser, longer-lasting impression. For warmer weather or lighter daily wear, EDT is an excellent choice; for occasions or cooler months where longevity matters, EDP is the better investment.

EDT typically lasts three to five hours on skin, depending on the specific formulation, individual skin chemistry, and application method. Some EDT formulations- particularly those from houses like Chanel, Guerlain, and Hermès- punch above their weight in longevity thanks to high-quality base materials. Applying to pulse points and moisturised skin will extend the performance of any EDT noticeably.

EDTs are ideally suited to summer; their lighter projection is less cloying in heat, and the fresh top notes shine more brightly in warm weather. Top summer EDT choices include Gucci Flora, Chanel Chance Eau Tendre, Dior Miss Dior, and Marc Jacobs Daisy. Aquatic and citrus-forward EDTs from houses like Issey Miyake and Hermès (Jardins collection) are also exceptional warm-weather choices.

EDT is often the better everyday choice- particularly for office or shared-space environments where a lighter projection is more considerate of others. The lower concentration also makes it a natural choice for casual daywear and warm months when a heavy fragrance would feel excessive. For evenings, special occasions, or colder months, upgrading to the EDP version of the same fragrance will typically deliver a more satisfying result.
