These days, Black Friday is everybody’s favourite chance to grab a bagful of bargains. With stores and brands across the western world offering massive discounts, the event is now so huge it is marked in company calendars and planned for months in advance.

The bumper shopping bonanza that we know and love today has a complicated history, though, and didn’t begin as a super sale, but came from some savvy retailers in a single US city trying to turn events in their city to their advantage.

Origins

In 1950’s Philadelphia, US, a big Army-Navy football game was traditionally held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. People came from all over to see the game, and on the Friday before, the town regularly experienced a deluge of shoppers, both locals and tourists, that the town initially struggled to deal with.

The extra crowds put a big strain on the city and its resources, and local police, who were charged with managing the extra crowds, traffic and incidents, are thought to have coined the term Black Friday in reference to all the extra hours and hard work they would have to put in during the event

It didn’t take long for local retailers to begin to take advantage of the crowds, and Black Friday became a city-wide event that both the retailers and their customers benefited from. There was an attempt to change the name to Big Friday, at one point, in order to disconnect the event from its chaotic beginnings, but the original was already stuck fast and the sale we know and love was well on its way.

At some point in the late 1980s, the idea spread to other US cities, and at one-point Black Friday enjoyed fame as the best time to get your wedding and bridesmaids dresses arranged, in order to take advantage of the discounts offered.

A Global Phenomenon

Now, 7 decades later, Black Friday is not just a firmly held tradition in the US, but has spread across the water in many directions, with retailers in more and more countries offering Black Friday deals.  Coming in mid-November, this falls nicely in time for anyone feeling like a little early Christmas shopping, or even better, for picking up a few bits and bobs to see you through the season’s parties and events.
